They can be found in China, South Asia and the Middle East and in most of Southern Africa except for the drier central areas. They are normally found near any suitable body of water, usually in pairs or loosely associated groups. They are considered common throughout their range and breed between August to November, incubation is not known. They feed mainly on small fish.
