Marabou Stork Leptoptilos crumeniferus
They have one of the largest wingspans measuring around 2.6m. Marabous are found mainly in the eastern and western tropical to sub-tropical areas of Southern Africa considered being a rare vagrant over most of their range, but may be common in places. The are often found around refuse sights or open woodland areas. They are almost always seen with other Marabou's especially at carcasses of large animals. They breed in May in Kruger National Park. Both sexes incubate for upto 31 days. Young can depend on parents for upto 4 months after fledging. They will eat anything from small crocodiles and fish to small birds, rodents and garbage. |
