They can be found through much of NW Africa, Arabia and Israel. Today they are mainly confined to game reserves in Southern Africa. They are the largest vultures in the area with a 2.6m wingspan. They are the most dominant vulture and are either found alone or in pairs. They are one of the few vultures, in this area, which also hunt and kill prey. They will breed in the winter months in Southern Africa, both sexes incubating. They feed on skin, hide and are known to catch Barbel and mammals up to the size of Scrub Hares.
