African Fish Eagle Haliaeetus vocifer
They can be found all over Southern Africa except in the dry arid areas of the country. Their closest relative is the American Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus. They are usually found in pairs and spend around 80% of their time perched in trees, scanning the water. They will breed from March to September, both sexes share incubation, which lasts for around 45 days. They will feed on the obvious but will also scavenge and have been recorded taking the young and eggs of other waterbirds, monkeys and young crocodiles. |
