European Swallow Hirundo rustica
They are found breeding in North America, North Africa and in Europe, migrating to Southern Africa from September to April. Some of these swallows have been recorded arriving here from eastern and western Russia, Europe and Britain. They can be found in large flocks anywhere in the country, but not in forests. Their main diet is flying insects, with upto 120 ants being found in some bird's stomachs, as well as certain species of worms, taken off flowers in flight. They are believed to be capable of moving upto 12 000km in 34 days. |
