Another member of the Ardeidae family, which can be found throughout most of Southern Africa, Madagascar and Mediterranean, North and South America and in Northern Australia. They are very common resident species. They are often to be found in grassland areas, around domestic stock during the day, but gather around the shores of inland water, where they drink before roosting. They breed between August to April. Both sexes incubate the eggs for 22-26 days; young first fly at about 30 days old. Feed on any small creatures they can catch but mainly grasshoppers.
