African Jacana Actophilornis africanus

They are considered to be common to abundant within their range. They are found on bodies of water with floating vegetation and foliaged banks. They are mainly found in small loosely associated groups and have been seen occasionally in-groups of upto 100 birds. They can swim and dive very well, especially when moulting. They breed between October and April in Southern Africa. The males incubate the eggs for a period of upto 26 days. Chicks are cared for by their father. Feeding on insects, small crabs, seeds and bulbs of the Water Lilly.
