Banded Mongoose: Mungos mungo

General:

  • They can be found in Mozambique, Botswana, Eastern Cape and Transvaal.
  • They are probably the most commonly seen of the mongoose in this area along with the Dwarf Mongoose.
  • They will weigh between 1- 2kg and are active during the daytime.
  • They are highly gregarious and move in bands of 6 - 35 individuals, possibly more.
  • They will often move into areas where troops of baboons have been feeding to pick up any leftovers.

Breeding:

  • Females give birth to about 4 young after a 2 - month gestation period.

Predators:

  • Large eagles, snakes and large enough mammalian predators take them.
