My husband and I were planning a trip to South Africa this year and planning to stay at Vuyatela. My dream has now been dashed to pieces knowing we will not be staying in Djuma . Coming all the way from the States to have to plan meals and do our own grocery shopping, which we already do at home, will not be a vacation for us. Thankfully, we have friends who have made many trips to S. Africa and can recommend other locations with luxury lodges. We will pick one.

I know this is a business for you and you have to make economical choices, just sorry those choices don’t fit into our vacation plans.

As if it wasn’t devastating enough to lose the real-time, on-line safari drives and now to temporarily lose the Gowrie Dam cam because of the flooding (which you cannot control) and also because the ‘zoomies’ were becoming almost useless (focusing in on tree trunks, bushes, the ground and insects) not panning the waterhole and looking for the wildlife, I think my viewing and interaction with Djuma has come to an end which is almost like losing a dear friend.

Good luck in the future and thanks for a glimpse into the past.

I stayed at Vuyatela in April of 2010, and it was truly an experience of a lifetime! Texon as my driver and Otis as my tracker, along with Patience and the rest of the staff made my visit an amazing experience. It has been the only time in my life in all of my traveling that I have ever cried leaving someplace, and I vowed to return.

I will be attending a conference in Durban in 2013, and had a group planning on coming back to Vuyatela with me to experience what I had the opportunity to experience last year. With you changing over to self-catering only, it makes it impossible to do.

I understand wanting to be able to make Vuyatela more affordable for those in South Africa, as I know that many living there have never had an opportunity to experience the wildlife your country offers. However, perhaps you might consider having both programs in place – a self-catering option for locals, and a full-board option for those of us coming from other parts of the world? I’d be curious to know what the current percentage is for those staying at Vuyatela from outside of South Africa and those from inside.

If you ever decide to make it a full-board option again, please let me know. In the meantime, please give my best to Texon, Otis, and Patience.

I thank you for you support and I do hope you visit us one day again. Self-catering is actually quite easy for a self drive guest, Hoedspruit is but an hour away and has two large chain grocery stores as well as a great assortment of butcheries, and smaller shops. Once at the lodge you merely hand over your groceries to chef Luzile and tell her what you would like and she will have it ready for you after your game drive.

My husband and i have looked forward to going back to vuyatela since we were there 4 years ago. It is the only place we wanted to revisit! I’m sad we now won’t be able to do that.

I haven’t been able to stop crying since I read this. I know you have to base your decisions on what works for the business, but the thought of never being able to stand on the deck and look out over the waterhole again is heart-breaking.

Thank you for the generosity you have shown me over the last 4 years. Having the freedom to traipse all over your lovely garden has left me with memories to last several lifetimes. I hope to meet you someday & share a sundowner with you lovely folks in this beautiful place.

Coming from the U.S. a self catered lodge would not work. Thanks.
