Djuma Game Reserve Weblog

The Reserve

The reserve is named from the Shangaan word meaning “roar of the lion” – just one of the big 5 game animals you’ll find on our doorstep. Djuma Private Game Reserve forms part of the privatised Sabi Sand Game Reserve, bordering on the famous Kruger National Park. There are no dividing fences between Djuma, Sabi Sand and the great trans-frontier national park, blending Djuma’s own 7000 hectares into a magnificent ecosystem that wraps around the eastern corner of South Africa.

The reserve enjoys a wealth of diverse wildlife, at ease in their natural and undisturbed surroundings. Visitors to Djuma are treated to some of the best game-viewing opportunities Africa has to offer, without compromising on luxury, fine dining and relaxation. Best of all, Djuma offers a team of long serving and dedicated staff that have made it famous for its friendly and professional service. We wait to greet you as our guests and at the end of your stay, bid you farewell as our friends.

History & Philosophy

Djuma Private Game Reserve was originally established as a private property in the 1970s, comprising two properties of almost 2000 hectares in total and traversing rights over an additional 5000 hectares. Jurie Moolman inherited the land from his father and set about laying the founding stones of what would become Djuma Private Game Reserve and its three lodges, Vuyatela, Bush Lodge and Galago, in 1993. Working side by side, Jurie and his wife Philippa built the Djuma legacy on personal passion and a love for both the land and the surrounding community.

Djuma’s philosophy has always been to conserve the land so that future generations can enjoy the pristine glory of the African bushveld. To make this a reality, we see responsible commercialisation as the key to preserving this natural wonder.

At the end of 2008, the Moolman Family sold Bush Lodge to Japie Van Niekerk and New Africa Developments, and it continues to operate as part of the Djuma Game Reserve under the Seasons In Africa banner.

Responsible commercialisation is not only essential for the maintenance of Djuma Game Reserve, but the job creation associated with the commercial process allows neighbouring communities to have a stake in these lands. This provides a direct incentive for local communities to help conserve their environment.

Djuma strives to provide an unforgettable and magical experience for its guests. By creating an atmosphere of warm hospitality, we’re able to bring our guests as close as possible to the sights and sounds of the undisturbed African landscape. We’d like you to leave Djuma with magical memories of a personal experience with the bush as well as added knowledge of South African culture and customs.

Conservation

Djuma Private Game Reserve recognises and embraces the important role it plays in the overall conservation of its environment. Every effort is made to maximise the preservation of our environment by practising responsible management techniques that protect and enhance the area for future generations. We aim to help secure the long-term sustainability of the South African tourism industry and are aligned with the Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa organisation.

Djuma Game Reserve is committed in taking action:

  • To achieve sound environmental practices across our
     entire operation
  • To comply fully with all environmental legislation and
     codes of conduct
  • To minimise our waste and to reduce, reuse and recycle
     the resources consumed by our business wherever
     practical
  • To reduce our pollution to a minimum
  • To invite our guests, suppliers and contractors to
     participate in our efforts to protect the environment
  • Where we can, to work with others in the tourism
     industry, in public agencies and the community to
     achieve wider environmental goals
  • To provide all employees with the training and resources
     required to meet our objectives
  • To openly communicate our policies and practices to
     interested parties
  • To monitor and record our environmental impacts on a
     regular basis and compare our performance with our
     policies, objectives and targets

Community

Djuma is actively involved in the surrounding communities and have facilitated establishing a trust – the Buffelshoek Trust – to help in this regard.

Constituted in July 2001 with the express aim of uplifting the Manyeleti villages; and with the patronage Mr Nelson Mandela who visited and opened our first school – Nwa Tumberi pre-school. The Buffelshoek Trust set about addressing an essential need of this poverty-stricken, rural community - education. The Trust chose to focus on education for it is a fundamental component of true empowerment.

This community has been identified as one of twenty-three rural and urban nodes by the South African government. These nodes represent the largest concentrations of poverty in the country. Approximately 800 000 individuals reside in the district and 70% of the community is not economically active. This is due, in part, to the fact that they do not have employable skills, have not had access to skills training and do not have the resources available to obtain these skills. Coupled with that, approximately 25% of the community are HIV positive. It is clear that those who are not infected are affected by the pandemic.

The initial investment in the community focused on school infrastructure. There were insufficient classrooms and resources for learners. Many classes were taught under trees and in extreme weather, lessons were cancelled. In addition, with the area being impoverished, many learners were under-nourished.

The Buffelshoek Trust has, together with its partners, spent in excess of R30 million on the following:

  • Constructed 3 crèches;
  • Refurbished 6 primary and 2 secondary schools
     including constructing ablutions and administration
     blocks;
  • Provided electricity for these schools;
  • Built approximately 44 classrooms;
  • Furnished 3 libraries;
  • Instituted agricultural projects adjacent to the schools;
  • Assists in the feeding of approximately 3000 learners
     daily;
  • Built 7 computer centres;
  • Provided water to 2 villages; and
  • Spends approximately a million rand on training for
     teachers and learners annually.

The Trust is now focusing on providing quality education through the construction of a semi-private school directed at Maths, Science and Technical subjects. In addition, we are planning to develop a facility that caters for the provision of tertiary education as well as entrepreneurial support at the DevCentre. We have also committed to providing the area with a health care facility. Providing our adopted schools with sports facilities and the resources to develop coaching is also a priority. We believe that investment into extracurricular activities is critical for youth development. The project is aimed at providing recreational facilities which promote teamwork and play, and a means to channel the activities of the youth towards more constructive recreation.

The Trust continues to undertake and become involved in exciting projects focusing on education in a holistic sense; and working in conjunction with the community is both rewarding and worthwhile. We believe that the Buffelshoek Trust, by working with the community and establishing relationships with government and donors, facilitates the community’s plans for a better future by helping to turn dust to dreams.

Vuyatela Lodge

Accommodation

The sprawling, colourful lines of Vuyatela create the perfect combination with the wild African landscape it wraps around. Funky, fusion décor embraces the new African luxury in an eclectic mix of environmentally complimentary design. Each of the eight opulent suites reflects local South African architecture without compromising on the sumptuousness that distinguishes Vuyatela’s unique identity.

The name “Vuyatela” means “come and visit again” and is aptly suited to this distinctive experience which has broken the mould of traditional African game lodges.

 Each of the eight suites at Vuyatela are designed in the traditional African kaya- style. A private lounge is separated from the bedroom by an expansive Teak deck. Glass doors open the indulgent bedroom to the view from the deck and the pristine African savannah. Four-poster king-size beds dominate the airy bedrooms, while spa baths and outdoor showers complete the ultimate indulgence. Each chalet has its own plunge pool set into the open deck where, if you’re lucky, you might catch a leopard stealing a drink of water.

Facilities

Overview

Vuyatela Lodge distinguishes itself from its other bushveld counterparts with its unique and extraordinary combination of modern luxury and traditional African culture. High-design furnishings sit comfortably alongside traditional mosaics and wall murals painted by local Shangaan villagers. The lodge embraces and indoor-outdoor atmosphere, making the most of the lovely South African climate. A well-stocked bar opens onto the flowing decks overlooking a massive watering hole, where you can often catch herds of elephant enjoying a mud bath or fall asleep to the grunting of the resident herd of Hippos. A specifically designed, suspended bird-watching tower is perched into the trees surrounding the main building, providing the prefect gazing post. A traditionally styled boma, which juts out over the surrounding bush, is the ultimate nook for a drink around the fire. If you’d like to spend some time working away some that remaining stress, a gym and relaxation room are just a few steps away. A library featuring wireless internet and a wide collection of reference books and websites is available to learn more about your surroundings.

Activities

Overview

Djuma’s biggest draw-card is essentially the wild and untamed surrounds into which its guests can explore.

Djuma offers over 7000 hectares of exclusive traversing, bordering right onto the western boundary of the Kruger National Park. This part of the African Bush is a hidden gem, offering some of the finest game viewing anywhere in Africa. The “Big 5” roams this unspoilt Eden, Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo can be spotted from the comfort and safety of our open game drive vehicles, accompanied by some of the most experienced Rangers and Trackers in the business.

Morning Game Drives

As the dawn begins to break at the start of another magical day in the African Bush, awaken to the sound of Hippo grunting their morning chorus from the Vuyatela waterhole, as they return from their nightly forage.
As the sun begins to make its appearance over the eastern horizon, venture out into the wilds with your Ranger and Tracker to explore yet more magical sights that the Djuma Game Reserve has to offer.

Bush Walks

For the more adventurous, after a legendary Djuma breakfast, take a walk on the wild side with your Ranger, where there is a wealth of information he will share with you when you take the time to have a closer look at your wild surrounds. Take an insight into your Rangers knowledge of how to determine the freshness of animal tracks, and search the undergrowth for tell tale signs of animal activity.

Village Trips

Djuma is actively involved in the surrounding local communities of Utah and Dixie. Guests are offered the opportunity to visit these neighbouring villages and gain insight into the rural South African way of life. From meeting the village elders to seeing the schools, the exuberance and enthusiasm of the villagers is often catching.

Evening Game Drives

After wiling away the heat of the day in the comfort of your air-conditioned Suite, or relaxing around the sanctuary of your private plunge pool, it is time once again to head out into the wilds of the Djuma landscape. As the sun begins to set, and the heat of the African day abates, this is the perfect time to spot the predators that prowl the Djuma lands. After stopping to watch the sunset over the distant mountains with a glass of something cold in hand, it is time to continue on into the darkness, a thrill in the air and an expectation with every breath, what lies around the next corner?

Returning to the Lodge to freshen up and a chat around the roaring fire in the Boma, discussing the events of the day, Jessie and her team will treat you to their culinary delights.

As one drifts off to sleep in the extreme comfort of your Suite, the night sounds become apparent, the distant roar of a Lion and the closer whooping of a hyena clan out on the hunt bid you goodnight, what wonders await the African dawn tomorrow?

We leave you with Vuyatela.......”come back and visit again”.

YOUR PRIVATE DJUMA EXPERIENCE
GRAHAM COOKE, GUIDE EXTRAORDINAIRE

Graham Cooke has been living and working in the bush for twenty two years. Graham has been involved in training as well as operating as a private guide, working in various locations from Zambia, Botswana, Swaziland, through to Northern Kwazulu-Natal.

He has worked and lived in a variety of wildlife areas within South and Southern Africa, including Londolozi in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in Mpumalanga, on the two main rivers of Zambia, namely the Kafue and Luangwa, Phinda Forest Lodge and Djuma Game Reserve, where he is now permanently based.

Graham has a deep seated love and understanding of wildlife and their environment. He is a devoted bird watcher, leading him to obtain a diploma in Ornithology, as well as setting up and running a rehabilitation operation for birds of prey.

He has had hands-on experience working close-up with some of the large predators; hand-rearing 2 leopard cubs which he lived with in the bush for over a year, as well as assisting in the hand-rearing and release of a lion cub. Other interesting projects have been a close study on a troop of baboons within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve.

He was a founder member of the highly respected, Ecotraining School. The first of its kind in Southern Africa to cater for the training of field guides.

Although birds are Graham's main interest, his knowledge base extends far beyond.
